The Cincinnati Reds placed catcher Tyler Stephenson on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday because of a fractured left thumb.
The move is retroactive to Sunday. In a corresponding move, the Reds selected the contract of catcher Will Banfield from Triple-A Louisville.
Stephenson, who turned 29 on Saturday, has not played since Friday, going 0-for-3 with one run scored in the Reds’ 10-8 loss to the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. He is batting .226 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs in 72 games after opening the season on the IL with a left oblique strain and returning to action on May 2.
Stephenson is a career .261 hitter with 59 home runs and 244 RBIs in 542 games since 2020. Cincinnati selected him 11th overall in the 2015 MLB Draft.
Banfield, 25, was batting .220 with two homers and 23 RBIs in 72 games this season at Louisville. A second-round pick by the Miami Marlins in the 2018 draft, Banfield signed with Cincinnati in the offseason as a free agent and has not played in the major leagues.
